I was scammed and now I'm looking at 1-3 years in prison can anyone help me?

My name is Bethany I am a 22 year old college student majoring in criminal justice and a mother of three young boys. I received a check in the mail claiming I had won $214,000 but they sent me a check for $4650.88 to pay the taxes on my winnings from where I play online games, three weeks later it came back fraudulant and now I am being charged with a felony theft over thousand which carries 1-3 years in prison. I have never been in trouble and this one charge can affect my whole life because I myself want to go into law enforcement after I finish school. Can anyone give me any advice that might help me in this journey?

Hi Bethany,

We're sorry to hear about your troubles . . . Could you give us some more information about why you are being charged with a crime? Who is pressing charges against you? Did you use the money and can not pay it back? What bank do you use? Do you have any paperwork that you can provide to us documenting your case?

Please let us know and we'll do our best to help!

Best,

I would think that if you could prove who sent you the check and show that you were given it by a company it shouldn't be you getting in trouble I would think it would be that company. Also if you have never been in trouble I would think there are options for you. I guess that deponds on your states laws though. I would go and trace back from the begging to the end of what happened, the company name, or web site, any infomation you can to prove yourself a victim in what went on.

Hi Bethany,
I am not judging you, but if you are studing law, you should have known that anything that sounds this good can only mean trouble, I only hope you have not spend any money that was not earned by you, because banks are like the Mob, if it's ther's they will put you away as long as they can, because that would earn them interrest, trust me I know, I got scamed by a bank and it's all leagal there is nothing that can be done untill we get some laws without loops they can jump through.
Good luck

My only advice is fire your public defender & get a lawyer that specializes in criminal law. As a criminal justice student you should already know what you should do. Did you actually take any criminal justice classes or just the prerequisites? This is Criminal Justice 101. I do not mean to sound so cold but .... If it sounds too good to be true than it probably isn't.

Dear Bethany....I am so sorry! That is the thing about trusting. I have no idea what you can do other than prayer. I know that may sound lame sitting where you are but I am a convicted felon and most of the time that was all that got me by! I was (recently) sent some fraudulent money orders and just threw them out. I would have loved to blown the whistle on some scammers but with my past record I did not think I was in a position to do so without causing trouble for myself. All I did was apply for a mystery shopper job and could have found myself right back behind prison walls. I can only offer you support and prayer and if you need someone to talk to please write...again I am so very sorry!
